Cold weather running gear will be a must at the Half Fast Half Marathon race, a newer road race that makes its 10th annual running here in the Twin Cities area in the late winter season and features a 6.55-mile and a 5K in addition to the 13.1-mile distance.
Organized by the locally based athletic gear store Tri Fitness — which also stages a number of running and triathlon events here throughout the year — the race offers runners the chance to really prove their mettle by running an outdoor race in Minnesota in what should be some of the coldest weather the area experiences all year.
In the spirit of the event’s name — so chosen so runners could then say they “ran a ‘half,’ fast!” — the event features a two-and-a-half-hour time limit, from the starting time of 9:00 AM to the 12:00 noon course closing time.
The race will follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Vadnais Heights Elementary School, along Centerville Road, and from there follows a counter-clockwise loop route through the town.
From there, the race takes runners along Labore Road and past Bridgewood Park, Community Park and Heritage Park, and through several residential neighborhoods. After runners pass the half-way point, they’ll make the loop a second time before crossing the finish line.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in southeastern Minnesota, the city of Vadnais Heights lies just a short drive north of nearby St. Paul, which typically experiences cold (often very cold) weather in February, a month that has brought record temperatures here as low as 32 degrees below zero (in 1996) and as high as 61 degrees (in 2000).
On race day (Feb. 18), the average low is 14°F and the average high is 31°F.
