Get ready to run a flat, fast 13.1 miles through the city where Kool-Aid was invented back in 1927 — which is celebrated each year with the Kool-Aid Days festival in August — at the Half Hastings race, which offers a half marathon, 5K and a Making Strides for Cancer Walk, through a combination of city streets, downtown districts, city parks and the campus of Hastings College.
Start at Hastings Middle School. Runners — and walkers, the race is open to both — in the half marathon will follow a point-to-point route that starts at Hastings Middle School, while those running the 5K will follow an out-and-back loop route that starts and finishes where all participants cross the finish line, inside Lloyd Winston Field on the campus of Hastings College.
Once you leave the starting line on North Marian Road, you’ll making a winding route along city streets as well as past and through city parks like Brickyard Park, Chatauqua Park and Libs Park, followed by a stretch that takes you around the edges of Hastings High School, and then to Lake Hastings Park, where you’ll run along the shore of Lake Hastings for a brief stretch.
The second half of the 13.1-mile race brings you south after that, toward Parkview Cemetery and Heartwell Park, which you’ll run along the edges of as you make your way along Lakeside Drive.
Finish at Hastings College. There’s a final looping stretch down the East Side Pedestrian Walkway and along 5th and 1st Streets before heading back up to Heartwell Park, and then finally into the Hastings College campus, where you’ll run inside Lloyd Winston Field to finish your race.
Throughout the race, you can expect paved surfaces, as nearly all of the course unfolds along city streets and paved trails through the city parks mentioned above. There is very little elevation change, so the race is flat throughout.
