Located less than an hour’s drive west from downtown Chicago, the city of Batavia plays host to the annual Half Madness 13.1 half marathon race, which take runners on an out-and-back loop course that winds through town on both sides of the Fox River, which cuts through the heart of this small city’s downtown districts.

Considered an excellent warm-up race for the annual fall Chicago Marathon, which takes place a little over a month later, Batavia’s Half Madness race starts and finishes on Houston Street in Batavia’s Riverwalk area, with a starting time of 7:00 AM. From there, the 13.1-mile race takes the field along what can best be described as a loop course, first along the city streets along the river’s western banks.

The terrain is rolling but mostly even for the race’s first four miles, following the uphill stretch right after runners head away from the riverfront and back toward historic Batavia, and takes runners past local landmarks like Memorial Field and Engstrom Park, both of which feature baseball fields, open green spaces and plenty of jogging trails.

After leaving historic Batavia, much of the half marathon’s remainder is run along the Fox River Trail, first heading south toward the southernmost area of the race course, and then crossing the river and heading north along the east side of the river. Much of this section of the race is fast and flat, giving runners a great chance to set a personal record for the half marathon distance.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in northeastern Illinois, roughly 40 miles west of downtown Chicago, the city of Batavia typically experiences warm weather in the late summer, as September temperatures average between 50°F and 75°F.
