The vast wilderness of northern Minnesota’s Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway and the Superior National Forest are the setting for the springtime Ham Run Half Marathon, which takes runners through some of North America’s most beautiful backcountry wilderness.

A point-to-point race that takes runners westward and northward along the Gunflint Trail, the race begins just south of Gunflint Lake and follows the trail all the way to the area known as Trails End on Seagull Lake.

Along the way throughout the race — which also includes a 5K — runners will experience a mixture of moderately hilly and flat stretches of course, which is made up of both gravel and paved roads.

The first three miles of the race bring the hilliest portion of the race, before the course flattens out for the remainder of the race. Wildlife of many varieties are a common sight, including moose, bear, wolves and many other species.

The race’s remote location, in the state’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, makes this race truly one to remember for participants. The beautiful lakes, combined with the towering pines along the 63-mile Gunflint Trail, make it the perfect place to enjoy Earth Day, which the race has coincided with in recent years.

Race Weather & Climate

Located among the seemingly innumerable lakes of northernmost Minnesota near the Canadian border, the town of Grand Marais typically experiences mild to even cool summers and very, very cold winters.

On race day (May 6), the average low is 36ºF and the average high is 53ºF.
