The small city that was named America’s best place to live in 2007 by the editors of Money Magazine plays host to the 11th annual running of the Haunted Hustle Half Marathon, which unfolds along a course made up of a combination of city streets, residential neighborhoods and paved and natural trails along the creek just north of downtown that feeds into Lake Mendota.
Runners are encouraged to embrace the Halloween theme of the race, as the event organizers welcome runners in costume (provided, of course, that the costumes are appropriate — the organizers stress that the Haunted Hustle is a family-oriented event).
The layout for the half marathon course is designed also to take runners past several of Middleton’s haunted sites (as legend has it, anyway!) and runners can expect “scary” sights and sounds along the way.
All the races in the event follow out-and-back courses that start and finish at Keva Sports Center near Airport Road, where there will be a post-race Halloween bash awaiting all the finishers as well as their friends and family who come out to cheer them on.
Runners leave the Keva Sports center and turn right onto Airport road before taking highway 12 where they will meet up with Paramenter St. Taking a right there, runners make there way through many of Middleton’s parks on Graber Rd, Whisttlesey Rd and onto Pheasant Branch trail.
Runners continue onto Pheasant Branch Road taking them to Balzer Road and Green Briar Road before meeting back up with Paramenter St heading toward the finish. However runners will stay on Airport Road and take the Pheasant Branch Trail in the last few miles of the race before arriving back at the Keva Sports Center.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled along the western edge of Wisconsin’s Lake Mendota, just a short drive from nearby Madison and just over 90 miles west of Milwaukee in the central southern part of the state, Middleton typically experiences much drier weather in October than in the preceding months.
On race day (Oct. 22), the average low is 35ºF and the average high is 56ºF.
