Are you ready to run through the heartland of America? Look no further than day 4 of the Heartland Series marathon and half marathon in Fulton, IL, taking place this year on July 9, 2024. It’s the fourth day in the seven-day series, with other races taking place in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. This race is truly where Midwest charm meets a challenging course with very little shade, a smooth asphalt surface, and a handful of rolling hills to keep things interesting. The event starts early (at 6 AM) to give runners the opportunity to beat the heat and conquer the course. There’s an elevation gain of just 36′ per lap, with 8 laps for the half marathon and 16 for the full. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the views of the Illinois countryside as you make your way around the course.

Speaking of views, this area is famous for its unique features, including the scenic Mississippi River and Heritage Canyon, which borders the course. You’ll also run through charming small towns, with friendly locals cheering you on at every turn. This is the type of race where you’ll feel like a part of the community, and the sense of camaraderie that comes along with that is priceless. There’s one giant “aid station” awaiting you on each loop. From fresh fruit and sandwiches to hot coffee and Loony Lunchbox’s mobile kitchen, there’s no shortage of fuel to keep you going. And since this is a multi-loop course, you won’t have to worry about carrying anything with you on the course. Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking for a new challenge or a beginner looking to cross the finish line for the first time, this race is for you. And with the option to do the half marathon distance, you can still experience the Heartland Series without committing to the full 26.2 miles.
