Note: The Heber Half Marathon will no longer be run as of 2016. Below is the information from the 2015 event.

Featuring a course with a “monster hill” that begins at about the 10 1/2-mile point of the race — a late-in-the-game challenge if ever there was one — this all-new half marathon is set for its first-ever running in mid-November in Heber Springs, a small city nestled along the shoreline of Greers Ferry Lake.

Fishing, boating, hiking and rock climbing are the big draws for people from around the Ozarks region of central and northwest Arkansas to Heber Springs, a small city of just over 7,000 that lies roughly an hour north of Little Rock and just over three hours from Fayetteville, the home of the University of Arkansas. The lake, the Little Red River and nearby Sugar Loaf Mountain put together are an outdoor recreation mecca throughout most of the year.

Runners will start both the half marathon and 5K at Sandy Beach, a park on the lake’s shoreline at the end of West Front Street. From there, the race follows what is roughly a sideways U-shaped route through Heber Springs, along a combination of residential neighborhood streets and in-town roads, as well as more rural country roads, especially in the Bittle Road stretch, both leading to and after the half-way point of the race.

The mid-point of the race is also where runners encounter the first of the race’s two big hills, as they’re heading toward the baseball fields at the Heber Springs Sports Complex on Big Dike Road, just off Bittle Road.

The course climbs some 140 feet between the mile 5 marker and the half-way point (mile 6.55), and then runners hit what organizers say is the race’s true “monster hill” around the 10.5-mile point, on Scott Street between 11th and 8th Streets.

There, the course climbs about 200 feet in roughly a mile, between the 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 mile points of the race. After that, the course largely flattens out and even features a slight downhill as it brings runners back in to Sandy Beach for the finish line.

Race Weather & Climate

Located near the banks of Greers Ferry Lake in central northern Arkansas, about 65 miles north of Little Rock, Heber Springs typically sees November temperatures that average between 39°F and 59°F, while precipitation amounts average just over 5.9 inches, making November its wettest month of the year.

On race day (Nov. 14), the average low is 39ºF and the average high is 60ºF.
