Set for its 10th annual running, San Jose’s Hellyer Half Marathon is part of the Brazen Racing series of trail running events around the San Francisco Bay area, and takes runners along a stretch of the Coyote Creek Trail, which winds alongside Coyote Creek just southeast of San Jose’s downtown.

More than 1,200 runners crossed the finish line in all three races combined in 2016, including just over 340 finishers in the half marathon alone.

Made up of mostly paved surfaces (and a brief stretch of gravel surface) for most of its nearly 19 miles, the Coyote Creek Trail stretches from the northern end of downtown all the way southward to Anderson Lake County Park, and connects a number of city and county parks along the way, with plenty of views of the creeks and streams along the trails. Though not far off the trail there are both densely populated residential neighborhoods on one side and both industrial and commercial buildings on the other, along the trail the scenery remains tranquil and filled with trees, open parklands and the creek flowing by, as much of it is covered with tree canopy.

Runners — and walkers as well as hikers, as the race is open to all — follow an out-and-back course for the half marathon that starts and finishes at the Silver Creek Sportsplex, just south of downtown San Jose. From there, runners head south, staying roughly parallel to Coyote Creek for much of the route. After reaching the turnaround point, runners head north along the Coyote Creek Trail — which takes them around the Hellyer Vellodrome — before reaching the second turnaround point.

Once runners reach the turnaround point, they retrace the path they just took before heading back to the Sportsplex.
