runsignup blueCombine a course with views of snow-capped mountains off in the distance as well as stretches that run through groves of citrus fruits — and some challenging hills — and that’s the course that awaits runners at the Highland Family YMCA Half Marathon, which also plays host to a 10K and a 5K race as well as a pair of races for kids.

Runners start the out-and-back course for the half marathon at Highland’s Arroyo Verde Elementary School, which lies on Church Street in Highland, just a few miles east of the headquarters for the Highland Family YMCA on Central Avenue.

From there, the course first makes a clockwise loop around Church Street, Baseline Road and Weaver Street before turning runners onto Greenspot Road, where they’ll make a left turn and head east toward the mountains.

It’s along this stretch, once they’re out of the neighborhoods near the school and into more of the wide-open roads, that they’ll get to see more of the scenery for which Highland and the surrounding towns are known.

They’re situated near the base of Big Bear Mountain, the home of the Bear Mountain and Snow Valley ski resorts, as well as Big Bear Lake up in the the mountains of the San Bernardino National Forest, which look down onto the valley below from numerous snow-capped peaks.

The course reaches the turnaround point just past the intersection of Greenspot Road and Santa Paula Street, sending runners heading back along Greenspot in the opposite direction all the way back west toward the elementary school, where they’ll repeat the first half of the race again before crossing the finish line.
