Set for its 7th annual running here in this suburb of Austin on the weekend before Halloween, the Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon is designed to be mostly flat with some downhill sections through a series of residential neighborhoods, at which runners are welcome to wear their craziest costumes — or not.

The race will follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Cedar Park Center, an indoor arena just off Highway 138A. From there, runners head into the neighborhoods that lie between New Hope Drive and Hero Way, passing by Tomlinson Park and the South Fork of Brushy Creek along the way.

As you’ll see on the course map page, the route is filled with mostly gently rolling hills as well as plentiful downhill stretches. From the starting line elevation of about 973 feet above sea level, the course never rises above a peak elevation of 1,025 feet, which it reaches in the section along 273 between mile markers 4 and 5.

Turn by turn, here are the streets you’ll run (in order): Avenue of the Stars, New Hope Drive, South Blockhouse Drive, Creek Run Drive, Blockhouse Drive, Meritage Boulevard, MacArthur Drive, Horizon Park Boulevard, Hero Way, 183A Frontage Road, Scottsdale Drive, North Blockhouse Drive again, South Blockhouse Drive, New Hope Drive, and Avenue of the Stars again to the finish line back at the Cedar Park Center.

The race will benefit the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, which provides support and resources to adults and children living with Down syndrome and their families.

Also, in addition to the half marathon for adults, the race also hosts a Kids Marathon for children in kindergarten through 6th grade. When a child signs up for the race, they’ll run 25 miles in the months leading up to race day; on the day of the race, they’ll run the final 1.2 miles to complete 26.2 miles of a full marathon.

The course for the race is USATF-certified, and organizers note that course support will end at 10:30 AM — but they’ll accommodate runners who haven’t yet finished the race by then if there are still a large number of participants yet to cross the finish line.
