The flat city streets of Amarillo, the largest city in the Texas panhandle, are the backdrop for the Hope & Healing Place Half Marathon, which makes its 8th annual running here in the late spring this year, and also features both a two-person and a four-person relay for the half marathon.

Designed as a benefit for the Amarillo-based nonprofit organization Hope & Healing Place, the race is intended to serve both as a fundraiser and an event to raise awareness of its mission to provide support for children and families dealing with grief and loss associated with the death of a parent, sibling or grandparent.

New for the race since 2015 is the Mile Memory Walk, for family and friends to take part in the race by walking a mile for a loved one — there will be a balloon release at the start of the walk, which begins at 9:00 AM.

For the half marathon, runners follow an out-and-back loop course for the race that will start and finish near downtown Amarillo along Polk Street, right in front of the Amarillo National Bank building.

From there, runners will head out along what is roughly a clockwise loop route through the city, including stretches in the early miles that take runners past the campus of Amarillo College and through local parks like Memorial Park (which lies adjacent to the college) and Stephen Austin Park.

As the early miles give way to the middle portion of the race, runners will head north along Crockett Street and then west along Julian Boulevard, Pecos Street and Plains Boulevard toward the intersection with Avondale Street, which marks the westernmost point of the race.

Runners turn right here and head north along Avondale, where they run along the western edge of the golf course on their way up to the brief loop section that takes them around three sides of West Hill Park.

Once around the park, runners then re-join Southwest 3rd Avenue for a brief stretch until meeting up with Independence Street, where they turn right and head south until they reach Southwest 6th Avenue.

Here is where the home stretch of the race begins, as runners make their way along 6th and 7th avenues for what is mostly a long straightaway stretch, all the way in to the final turns on Van Buren Street, 3rd Avenue and Polk Street to head into the finish line.
