Runners get a chance to run along the trail known to locals as the skinniest park in Lorain County, Ohio, at the Inland Trail Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk, which marks its 14th annual running in early November.

This out-and-back loop race follows what was once the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad, and is now a 65-mile “rails to trails” park that stretches from Elyria all the way to Toledo, and takes runners from the tiny village of Kipton all the way to the finish at the Murray Ridge Center in Elyria.

(The marathon course is out and back on the Inland Trail from Murray Ridge School in Elyria to Kipton and back.  The 5K course is also out-and-back, starting at Murray Ridge School.)

Throughout the race, participants run on a course made up entirely of paved surfaces, the 12-foot-wide North Coast Inland Trail that gives rise to the park’s local fame as the “skinniest park in Lorain County.”

From the starting line at Murray Ridge School on Murray Ridge Road, runners follow the trail along virtually a straightaway path the entire race, following the trail as it criss-crosses several roads and intersections through the towns of Kipton, Oberlin and Elyria.

Along the 13.1-mile route, there’s a variety of scenery for those running the race, as participants pass through tree-lined parts of the trail through forest areas, as well as through wide-open farmlands.

The trail is open to bicyclists, runners, walkers, in-line skaters and even cross-country skiers in the winter season, but expect only runners during the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located about 10 miles inland from the shores of Lake Erie and just to the west of nearby Cleveland, Elyria tends to experience moderately cool to sometimes quite cold weather conditions in the early fall, with occasional showers.

On race day (Nov. 4), the average low is 38ºF and the average high is 56ºF.
