activeregisterRunners get a chance to run through a combination of surroundings and terrain at the Jungle Run Half Marathon & 10K, which takes the roughly 2,000 runners who come out for the race each year on a tour of the Los Gatos area, including stretches of the course that run through the Los Gatos Creek Park reservoir, Vasona Lake County Park and Oak Creek Park.

Mostly fast and flat, much of the race follows a course along the Los Gatos Creek, through this city that’s located just a few miles south of San Jose in Northern California.

The race starts at the Los Gatos High School track and field complex, which lies just off New York Avenue, and follows an out-and-back course that takes runners northward along the Los Gatos Creek, along roads including Los Gatos Boulevard, Blossom Hill Road and Winchester Boulevard.

As it makes its way northward, the course follows from the roads onto the Los Gatos Creek Trail, a several-miles-long nature trail that leads participants to the city’s Vasona Park, a 45-acre county park with a waterfront playground and six miles of paved trails.

After running a loop around the park, race participants are then directed southward back onto the Los Gatos Creek Trail to Old Town Los Gatos, where they meet the unpaved section of the trail and hit the turnaround point before the dam. After the turnaround, runners are directed back the same direction toward the finish line at the high school.

Though most of the course is relatively even, runners will encounter hills between the second and third mile markers as well as between mile markers 11 and 12, when the course reaches its highest point. After that, it’s all downhill toward the finish.

To complete the race within the time limit allowed — organizers expect to have the finish line cleanup completed by 12 noon — runners will need to keep a pace of at most 15 minutes per mile, which means prospective runners should be able to finish the race in just over three hours.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California’s San Francisco Bay Area, just over 10 miles southwest of San Jose, Los Gatos typically sees July temperatures that average between 85°F and 55°F, while rainfall is nearly nonexistent this time of year.

On race day (July 17), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 85ºF.
