Runners looking for a long, downhill half with a friendly, fun feel will feel more than welcome at Pocatello’s annual Just Cuz Half Marathon, which has grown from just four runners at its first running to a few hundred finishers a year every year today.

Begun by a local resident who was looking for a tune-up race to train for Arizona’s Tucson Marathon in 2006, the race takes runners along the highways from the Caribou National Forest just to the south of the city all the way to Pocatello’s Centennial Park, where in past years a post-race party with homemade chili — and homemade race t-shirts — has awaited the runners crossing the finish line.

The race begins shortly after 10:00 AM and runners will be transported by shuttle bus from the city to the starting line, which lies at the area called Crystal Summit inside the Caribou National Forest, a 3-million-acre protected forest area that stretches across the southeastern part of the state and touches its borders with Wyoming, Montana and Utah.

From there, runners follow first Mink Creek Road and then the Bannock Highway for most of the race’s 13.1 miles, turning off Bannock and onto Grant Road between the 11 and 12 mile markers, just after passing by the Riverside Municipal Golf Course.

Runners need to be aware that the course will be open to traffic during the race, so they’ll need to yield to traffic as necessary.

After the first couple of miles, which are largely downhill, the rest of the race is mostly flat, the race organizers note.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled in the western foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southeastern Idaho, at an elevation of just over 4,400 feet above sea level, the city of Pocatello typically experiences cool to quite cold weather conditions in the mid-fall season, and relatively low precipitation year-round.

On race day (Oct. 15), the average low is 52ºF and the average high is 74ºF.
