runsignup blueSet for its 15th annual running this summer along the city streets of this small city in the western part of the state, the Karner Blue Butterfly Race Half Marathon takes runners through the area known as Wisconsin’s “Black River Country.”

The area is known for its ample opportunities to get outdoors, including more than 230 miles of trails for all-terrain vehicle riding as well as hiking and mountain biking trails, and even scuba diving in nearby Wazee Lake, the state’s deepest lake.

Like the half marathon, the event’s 10K and 5K races will follow an out-and-back course that starts at Mark’s Field, just off North 10th Street, and finishes in Black River Falls’ Field of Honor Park, which lies just off North Water Street near the city’s Chamber of Commerce office.

Built in a pentagon shape around a 32-ft-high flagpole that is lighted from dusk until dawn every day, the park is designed as a memorial to honor local area veterans of World Wars I and II as well as the wars in Korean and Vietnam.

From the starting line, runners in the half marathon leave the park and head out onto the Foundation Trail, a 6.5-mile hiking and biking trail that winds through the eastern part of the city.

Runners follow the trail out to the city’s Skyline Golf Course and then into the Kenyon Valley area, and then follow the route back to Field of Honor Park for the race finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the winding Black River in central western Wisconsin, roughly 130 miles northwest of Madison, the city of Black River Falls typically experiences some of its warmest weather of the year during the month the race is held.

On race day (July 20), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 82ºF.
