runsignup blueOne of Montana’s smaller half marathon road races, with usually around 100 finishers total each year, the Kickin’ Assphault Half Marathon & 10K takes runners along both the northern and southern banks of the Missouri River, giving runners plenty of views of the water flowing by as well as the mountains off in the distance.

The half marathon starts in Riverside Park, which lies on the northwestern edge of the city, and follows a point-to-point course that takes runners first along the northern banks of the river, along the riverside trail that winds along the river to Black Eagle Falls.

It’s known as the River’s Edge Trail, and takes runners on a paved trail up a hill that features gravel surfaces for a brief stretch, followed by paved trails again on the way to the first turnaround point. After reaching Black Eagle Falls, the course retraces its steps toward the intersection with the 9th Street Bridge.

Runners cross under the bridge (the trail takes them under the bridge) and then turn left to get onto the bridge and cross the river, where they then head along the river’s southern portion of the River’s Edge Trail, all the way to the turnaround point at the western part of Giant Springs State Park.

The route westward leads runners into the area of Great Falls known as the old Smelter housing district, known for its old-style hand-made blocks, waterfalls and many old home foundations.

As the race route curves west and south with the bend in the river, runners keep following the trail until they return to the finish line at Riverside Park.
