activeregisterSince 1982, this popular 10K and 2.1-mile race has taken place every spring here in this small upstate New York town that’s home to just over 23,000 people along the Hudson river, about an hour’s drive south of the state capital in Albany, and sponsored by the local chapter of Kiwanis International.

For the first time in 2014, the race added a full marathon, a half marathon and a 5K to the ever-popular 10K, which follows a point-to-point course that starts at the corner of North Front Street and Frog Alley in Kingston and finishes at Dietz Stadium, the home of the Kingston High School Tigers football team.

Though details for the full marathon and half marathon routes are always subject to change, the race courses are set to start and finish in the same locations as previous years’ events, and take runners along the city streets of Kingston, which is incidentally the hometown of filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich, who directed 1971’s The Last Picture Show.

The race has gone through ups and downs in its more than 30-year history, beginning with just over 300 finishers at its first running in 1982 to more than 1,000 in later years, only to fall on harder times in the early 2000s, as the number of entrants dipped and the event went through several race directors (and was even cancelled in 2010 due to the lack of a race director that year).

Now managed by the race management company HITS Endurance and the Kingston Kiwanis Club, the race saw just over 880 finishers in both races combined in recent years, and expects many more for the 2016 race with the addition of the three new race distances.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the banks of the Hudson River in Upstate New York, about 55 miles south of Albany and roughly 90 miles north of New York City, Kingston typically sees its fourth-wettest month of the year in April, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 13 degrees (in 1954) and as high as 94 degrees (in 1976).

On race day (April 26), the average low is 40ºF and the average high is 65ºF.
