Note: The 2022 race has been canceled due to COVID-19

As many as 1,500 runners makes their way from all corners of the globe every summer for the annual Kona Marathon, Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon & 5K, which features a point-to-point course that starts at the Waikoloa Beach Resort and unfolds past its golf course, hotels and homes, nestled here along Hawaii’s Kohala Coast.

The race is filled with gently rolling terrain but the elevation change is very small — the course’s low point lies at just over 20 feet above sea level, and its highest point reaches only just over 110 feet.

Runners start the race along the maintenance road at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, which lies in the shadow of nearby Mauna Kea here on the Big Island. Famed for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean as well as its lagoons and lakes along its golf courses, the resort is where you’ll spend most of the race, running along Waikoloa Beach Drive and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

From the starting line, the half marathon makes a counter-clockwise loop along the main roads within the resort, and then runs out to the turnaround point along Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. Once runners make the turn, they’ll head back to Waikoloa Beach Drive and follow it around the resort before heading in to the finish line at the Waikoloa Bowl at Queen’s Garden.

Runners will have 8 hours to finish the race, which makes it a walker-friendly event. Aid stations along the course will begin closing after the final participant has passed or by 1:30 PM, whichever comes first.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the western shore of Hawaii’s Big Island, the resort town of Kailua Kona typically sees warm to moderate weather conditions throughout the year, and usually much drier weather than the northern and eastern shores of the island.

On race day (June 26), the average low is 72ºF and the average high is 85ºF.
