The tree-lined country roads that surround the waters of Lake Lacamas here in southern Washington state are the setting for the annual summertime Lake Lacamas Half Marathon, 6K & 1K Kids Run, which takes more than 1,000 runners each year on an out-and-back race on the country roads and lakeside trails that surround both sides of the lake.
Runners start both the 13.1-mile half marathon and the 5K at the intersection of 4th and Cedar in downtown Camas, and from there they head north along Dallas toward Crown Park, and then along Everett toward Lacamas Lake.
The course makes one of its steepest downhill descents between the start and the first mile marker, and then flattens out for the next mile and a half or so as runners make their way northwest along the northern edge of the lake.
After runners follow the course around the northwest tip of the lake, the route next takes runners along the roads that run past the green, wide fairways of Camas Meadows Golf Course.
The field takes a brief out-and-back loop between the mile 5 and 8 markers along Camas Meadows Drive down to Northwest Lake Road and back, and then returns back to Goodwin Road, where runners then turn right after passing through mile 8 onto Underwood Road.
The next stretch of the race, which unfolds along the Heritage Trail along the southern edge of the lake, features some of the race’s most scenic views, especially of Oregon’s nearby Mount Hood in the distance.
This stretch of the course also marks a change from paved surfaces to dirt trails, and race organizers note that the hills along this stretch are much smaller than those earlier in the race.
The last mile or so of the race brings runners back onto paved roads when the field turns onto North Lake Road and begins the final 1.1 miles of the race back into Camas for the finish line, back along Everett, Dallas and then back to 4th and Cedar for the race finish.
