runsignup blueA nearly completely flat course around the shoreline of Lake Lowell inside Idaho’s Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge awaits runners at the annual Lake Lowell Marathon & Half Marathon, which sees a few hundred runners cross the finish line in all races combined each year.

The race takes runners along the roads that wind around Lake Lowell inside the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, whose 10,588 acres first became a refuge for migratory birds like mallards and Canada geese back in 1909, when president Theodore Roosevelt first set aside for protection the land then known as the Deer Flat Reservoir as a national bird refuge.

The nearby Snake River Islands Refuge was set aside for protection in the 1930s, and the two were consolidated into a single park and refuge for birds, trees and other wildlife in the early 1960s.

Today, of course, the refuge’s open water, wetlands, grasslands and forest areas remain an important bird sanctuary and offer a peaceful, serene setting for the Lake Lowell race. For runners in the half marathon, the out-and-back race begins on the eastern/northern end of the lake, in Lake Lowell Park.

From the half marathon starting line, the race then unfolds along a sideways U-shaped route that’s almost entirely flat. The only hill of any real significance doesn’t rise up to meet runners until they’ve reached the mile 10 marker, where the course rises just over 100 feet in elevation between miles 10 and 11 along Indiana Avenue.

Once they’ve passed the mile 11 marker, the road descends just as quickly as it rose, bringing runners south toward the Upper Dam.
