Set for its 40th annual running this year, the Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon typically sees more than 2,000 runners cross the finish line each spring, for a race that takes runners on a point-to-point route along the shores of the lake by the same name here just west of Minnesota’s Twin Cities area.

The race features a gorgeously scenic course that takes runners on a tour of the bays, waterways and regional park areas that make up Lake Minnetonka, which lies just a short drive west from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.

In addition to the individual half marathon, the race also hosts a 2-person half marathon relay and a “Kids K” run that starts at 10:15 AM.

For runners in either the individual or relay half marathon, the course for the race winds around the lake from the town of Wayzata to nearby Excelsior to the finish line on Lake Street near Excelsior Commons park.

The course’s starting line lies at Wayzata’s Wells Fargo Bank (which is also the race’s sponsor) on Superior Boulevard, and takes a mostly eastward and then southward route along the lake, following a counter-clockwise direction.

A wave start will be used for the race, and will start runners off every 3 minutes beginning at 7:00 AM — the first wave will be runners who expect to finish in less than 1 hour, 45 minutes, followed by those who will finish in between 1:46 and 2 hours at 7:03 AM, and so on.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central southern Minnesota, about 13 miles west of downtown Minneapolis, Wayzata typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in May, a month that has brought record temperatures here as low as 18 degrees (in 1967) and as high as 95 degrees (in 1969).

On race day (May 3), the average low is 42ºF and the average high is 66ºF.
