Surrounded by plentiful trees, farm fields and shoreline homes, Lake Bloomington has been the home of the annual Lake Run race for more than three decades, since its first running all the way back in 1982 drew just over 200 runners.
Last year saw more than 1,000 runners cross the finish line in all race distances combined, and this year marks the race’s first ever with the half marathon distance, which will follow the same route as the 12K and 7K races, with an additional out-and-back stretch tacked on in the nearby countryside to ensure runners complete their 13.1 miles.
Built in the 1920s, the 635-acre lake has an 18 1/2-mile-long shoreline that runners will get to see plenty of during the race, which organizers describe as “scenic with a few rolling hills.” In addition to the three running events — 13.1 miles, 12K and 7K — there is also a three-mile walk, which starts alongside the 7K at 9:00 AM.
And here’s what the race organizers say you can expect at the finish line:
“Join us for the friendliest post-race party in McLean County! Plenty of food, soda, and free beer! Lots of door prizes will be given away including a grand prize Mountain Bike from Vitesse Cycle Shop in Normal, Ill. But… you must be present to win!”
