runsignup blueThe final race in a series of races hosted each year in this coastal Connecticut city by the locally based Lightfoot Running Club, the Sam Elpern Memorial Half Marathon usually sees a few hundred runners cross the finish line each year on a course that unfolds through shaded residential neighborhoods along the area known as the Merrit Parkway.

Runners start the out-and-back loop course for the race at Norwalk’s Fox Run Elementary School, just off Fillow Street. From there, the course takes runners onto the occasionally hilly roads just west of downtown Norwalk, a city of roughly 85,000 where the Norwalk River empties into Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound.

The course is a double-loop route that first heads south from the school toward the campus of Norwalk Technical Community College, where it heads straight through the campus and then toward West Norwalk Road.

The next few miles along West Norwalk Road and Old Rock Lane feature the race’s longest uphill stretch, which still unfolds mostly gradually over the next few miles — runners will repeat this uphill on the second loop of the half marathon.

The only significant difference between the first and second loops of the race occur just before runners reach the half-way point of the race.

On the first loop, runners will bear to the left and continue on Ponus Avenue toward Ponus Ridge Middle School and Oak Hills Park Golf Course; while on the second loop, they’ll bear to the right on Fox River Road, and head back toward the school for the race finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled near the coast along the southwestern corner of Connecticut, just over an hour’s drive from New York City, Norwalk typically sees its rainiest month of the year in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 31°F (in 1957) and as high as 99°F (in 1983).

On race day (Sept. 11), the average low is 54ºF and the average high is 76ºF.
