Set for its 11th annual running around this 3,000-acre lake just outside Minneapolis, the Lola’s Lake Waconia Half Marathon & 5K also hosts a 10-mile race in addition to a half marathon relay, which was run for the first time a couple of years back.
More than 1,900 runners crossed the finish line in the half marathon, 5K run and Dog Day 5K combined each year — including more than 1,000 finishers in the half marathon alone — and takes runners along an out-and-back, counter-clockwise, USA Track & Field-certified loop route that runs all the way around Lake Waconia, a little over a half-hour’s drive from the Twin Cities.
Runners start the race at City Square Park in Waconia, and first head through the city’s streets for the first few miles, in the direction of Burandt Lake.
Once they make it back to City Square Park, then the race begins the stretch that unfolds around the lake, keeping the field largely on Laketown Parkway, North Shore Road and North Walnut Street before heading back into town and across the finish line on Main Street in front of the park.
Much of the race features fast and flat terrain, though their are occasional rolling hills along the course. For runners who don’t feel up to running all 13.1 miles by themselves, there’s a two-person half marathon relay event as well as an all-new 10-mile race this year.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in central southern Minnesota, about 30 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis, Waconia typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in June, a month that has brought record temperatures here as low as 36 degrees (in 1979) and as high as 101 degrees (in 1988).
