Held during the time of year when male tarantulas are looking for mates, the Tarantula Run Half Marathon takes runners along a combination of dirt trails, asphalt and gravel, with plenty of elevation changes — as well as lots of scenic views — along the way.

Runners take note, however — with more than 2,200 feet of elevation change during the course of the race, this is likely not one you can expect to PR.

The course begins along Kellogg Creek Trail and travels east for just a short while before making a loop turn to head west. For the first 2.5 miles, the course is relatively flat and easy. Runners will begin to make their way towards the large loop section where Kellogg Creek Trail intersects with Crest Trail.

After making a left on Crest Trail, runners will begin to climb elevation steadily over the next mile and a half. The course continues in a clockwise direction as runners reach the Vista Grande Trail. Nearing the apex of elevation, runners will then begin travelling along the trail for another relatively flat section on Eagle Ridge Trail.

Once completing the westernmost section of the course, racers will come to Grassland Trail and make a right. The course will begin to slowly descend in elevation and runners will near the halfway mark. At the Salamander Trail, runners turn right and wind their way east. This portion of the course is fairly flat when compared to the big climb at mile 2.5.

Racers will continue along the course until they reach the intersection of Kellogg Creek Trail and Crest Trail. After making a left onto Kellogg Creek Trail, runners will make a left and begin their return towards the finish. They will come back they way they traveled in the first couple of miles as they run this section of the course in reverse.

As runners make their way across the finish line, they can collect their medal. Runners who are fast enough can vie for one of the top overall awards and one of three age group awards. There is a 4.5 hour time limit with an option to have a “hiker’s start” one hour prior to race time.

Race Weather & Climate
