runsignup-blueFans of Lucille Ball will get a kick out of this all-new half marathon set to make its inaugural running in mid-October here in this city of roughly 31,000 in western New York state, perhaps most famous as the hometown of the legendary star of “I Love Lucy.”

Runners will get to run past many of the places where Lucy spent time growing up here in in the early decades of the 20th century (she was born here in August 1910).

They’ll run past Lucille Ball Memorial Park and Lucy’s childhood home in the nearby town of Celoron, and past the Lucy-Desi Museum & Desilu Playhouse in Jamestown, where after the race you can see complete replicas of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo’s New York City apartment from their television show, as well as lots of other memorabilia from their entertainment careers.

The race is split up over two days — the 5K is run on Saturday, while the half marathon starts on Sunday. The half marathon will follow roughly an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in Jamestown, between 3rd and 2nd Streets.

From there, the course first makes a loop along Washington Street over the Chadakoin River and back, and then heads west along West 3rd Street, taking runners down to the trail at Jamestown Business College.

The trail parallels Fairmount Avenue for about a quarter to a third of a mile, and then joins James and Gifford Avenue (where it crosses over the river again) for a long westward stretch that brings runners into the nearby communities of Celoron and Lakewood, which lie near the southern end of Chautauqua Lake.

This stretch features several rolling hills as runners head west along Terrace Avenue and then return east along Summit Street just south of the lakeshore.

After they meet up with Lakeside Boulevard for the second time, they’ll run largely along the stretch they ran earlier in the race, in the opposite direction this time as they head back into Jamestown. The finish line will lie just a few blocks from the starting line, along West 3rd Street downtown.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the Chadakoin River in western New York, about 75 miles south of Buffalo and roughly 145 miles northeast of Cleveland, Ohio, Jamestown typically sees cool to mild weather in October, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 13°F (in 1985) and as high as 86°F (in 2007).

On race day (Oct. 9), the average low is 40ºF and the average high is 61ºF.
