Set for its 12th annual running along the streets and converted railroad trails outside this southern Virginia town that’s perhaps known best for its NASCAR racing track, the Martinsville Half Marathon & 5K features a course that includes a mix of flat stretches along the city’s roads as well as along the hills just outside town, and also features a one-mile fun run for kids.
All three races in the event take runners on out-and-back courses that start and finish at the Martinsville YMCA on Starling Avenue, located just a stone’s throw from the city’s Virginia Museum of Natural History.
From there, runners make their way along the winding Martinsville streets and then into the city’s uptown area for the first two miles, followed by the next section of the race, which unfolds along a newly-constructed former railroad trail that’s been converted for walking, jogging, biking and hiking.
Runners continue along the rail trail until they reach the mile 12 marker in the race, after which they exit the trail and then head back along Martinsville’s city streets toward the YMCA, where the race finish line lies.
Runners must be able to complete the race in just over 3 hours (3:03, to be exact), which means that participants will need to keep at least a 14-minute-per-mile pace to finish the race before the cutoff time.
The race is presented by the locally based medical center Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, and proceeds from the race go to benefit the Martinsville-Henry County Family YMCA’s Invest in Youth Fund, which aids local kids and teens who wish to take part in the YMCA programs but don’t have the money for the program fees, to ensure that no child is turned away who wishes to participate.
At the 2017 running, 480 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in both races combined, with 92 finishers in the half marathon.
