Nestled halfway between Lake Elsinore and Diamond Valley Lake here in what is known as the Menifee Valley of Southern California, runners will take to the streets of this growing city for the annual Menifee Half Marathon & 5K, an out-and-back race that features a combination of city streets and more rural highways.
Runners will start the half marathon and the 5K on the campus of Mount San Jacinto Community College-Menifee Valley, near the intersection of La Piedra Road and Antelope Road, which parallels Interstate 215.
From there, runners start out the race by heading south along Antelope Road for the first two and a half miles, heading down to the race’s first turnaround point, just before reaching Scott Road.
Through this area, the course scenery changes from homes and residential neighborhoods along the roadway to more wide-open terrain, just outside Menifee, which is one of Southern California’s newest cities — it was established in 2008.
Runners make their way north along Antelope from the first turn up to Garboni Road, where they make a right and head east along Garbani for the next two miles, passing by the hills surrounding Bell Mountain off in the distance over their left shoulders as they head toward the next turn just past the mile 5 marker, from Garbani onto Briggs Road.
The next stretch of the race follows a long out-and-back run along Briggs, combined with a shorter out-and-back stretch along Holland Road, which takes runners out to the second turnaround point in front of Southshore Elementary School.
From there, the course brings the field back eastward along Holland Road to Briggs Road again, which runners will follow south back to Garbani Road and begin the return route along the course they ran earlier back toward the MSJC (Mt. San Jacinto College) campus for the race finish.
Runners will be able to register for the event on the same day as the race, if they haven’t already signed up beforehand. Along both the half marathon and 5K routes, runners can expect to see plenty of grass-covered hills surrounding Menifee as well as the much larger (and often snow-capped) San Jacinto Mountains off in the distance throughout the race.
