With the rocky summit of nearby Mount Monadnock, one of the world’s most frequently climbed mountains and still a popular spot for hikers and mountaineering enthusiasts today, looking over them, runners will suit up this summer for the 6th annual Monadnock Half Marathon, a race that will also feature a 5K.

Set to take runners along a combination of paved country roads and dirt roads around this quintessential New England small town — about 6,000 residents call Rindge home — the race will feature a course that’s both easy enough for beginners and intermediate-level runners, organizers say, but which also features some challenging hills for experienced runners.

The USA Track & Field-approved course for the race will follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes just south of the campus of Franklin Pierce University, along University Drive and next to Pearly Lake.

From there, they first head south toward Route 119, where they make a left and loop back around to University, and then head north into the campus of Franklin Pierce University. There’s a long stretch out-and-back along Mountain Road, Ingalls Road and Great Road, before heading back to the lake for the race finish.

Runners should note also that the race’s most challenging hill occurs just as they’re running between the mile 5 and 6 markers along Great Road, which you’ll run downhill again between miles 9 and 10.

Race Weather & Climate

Located near the state’s southern border, just over 40 miles southwest of Manchester, Jaffrey typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in August, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 28°F (in 1965) and as high as 96°F (in 1955).

On race day (Aug. 7), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 78ºF.
