Founded in 1996 in memory of sisters Kathy Waldron Perry and Kelly Waldron—both lost to cancer just months apart—this race has turned into a heartfelt New England tradition. Highlighting the dramatic sunrise over Monson’s historic center, it pairs challenge with community spirit every late October.
Set on a certified USATF course, the half marathon kicks off at 12:00 pm ET (5K follows at 12:15). It unfolds across rolling rural roads and town streets, featuring sustained climbs in the first ~10 miles, then rewards runners with a sweeping downhill final 5K—a demanding but fair challenge praised by vets for its “nasty vert” and balanced layout.
Aid stations are plentiful (typically seven), manned by cheerful volunteers who add local flavor—including post-race bagpipe send-offs and grandmothers serving homemade food. A lively finisher’s party follows: live music, massage, medals, long-sleeve tech shirts, and generous cash prizes (top 5 receive $400→$75).
What sets Monson apart is its authentic New England charm—a small field of 100–500 runners pushing through scenic autumn hills, ending at the historic Memorial Hall in Monson’s designated historic district. As one repeat participant noted:
“I love the nasty vert…then you get rewarded with a downhill 5k at the end.”
Proceeds benefit cancer‑related causes, currently Griffin’s Friends—supporting children battling pediatric cancer.
