Held in early January, the Operation Jack Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K takes runners on an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Dockweiler State Beach, just east of Los Angeles International Airport.
This fast and largely flat race offers the perfect way to cap off your running year with the chance to set a new PR time, all while enjoying gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean for nearly the entire race.
Runners will start the race in Dockweiler State Beach park, just off Vista Del Mar and Marine Avenue, and from there head north along the bike paths that wind through the park for the first few miles. They’ll follow the path all the way to Ballona Creek, where they’ll turn right and cross over the creek, and then head along the path until they pass the mile 4 marker.
Just past the marker, the course then makes a turnaround and runners will take the same path for about 6.55 miles south. They will cross by the start/finish area and continue along the path, until they reach the second turnaround point at Manhattan Beach. There, they will make their final U-turn and run about 2.4 miles back to the finish line.
All finishers will receive a medal upon completing the race. The top three overall male and female winners will receive awards along with the top three in each age group. Runners with jogging strollers are welcome to participate — as long as they start at the back of the pack.
As noted on the organization’s official website, its mission is “to encourage parents, relatives and friends of those struggling with autism to find a positive outlet by leading an active lifestyle that promotes awareness and raises funds for autism-related charities.” Operation Jack was started in 2009 as a non-profit charity designed to raise funds for autism related charities, and runners may opt to fundraise $150 to waive the registration fee.
Race Weather & Climate
The setting for the race is Playa del Rey, a beachside community in western Los Angeles, that enjoys a Mediterranean climate with typically mild temperatures in January. Runners can expect plentiful sun and dry weather on race day, as rainfall for the month here averages just over 2.3 inches.
On race day (January 8), the average low is 48ºF and the average high is 68ºF.
