Saturday, April 1, 2023 • Garden City, KS • Course Map

Nestled in the center of Kansas, is the town of Garden City, a community that has gathered around its appreciation for the outdoors. The city is dotted with several gardens, public parks and recreation centers and outdoor spaces. Garden City is home to the Lee Richardson Zoo, the largest zoological park in western Kansas and a popular tourist attraction.

In the town’s spirit of loving outdoor activities, Garden City holds its Outrun Childhood Obesity Run. The 2022 race will mark the 14th anniversary of the event.

The Outrun Childhood Obesity Run features a half marathon, 10K, 5K and 2 mile run. The run was established to help raise awareness about childhood obesity and to raise funds for a program to educate children about nutrition and fitness. This program is known as the GCRC After School and Summer Fit Camps for kids.

The race featured a new route in 2015, an out-and-back course that will start and finish at the Charles Peebles Softball Complex at 518 South 9th Street. (Last year’s race started and finished at the Clarion Inn downtown.)

The route remains flat throughout the entire course, and since a modest number of participants have signed up for the half marathon distance in the past, runners are given plenty of space during the race.

Those participating in the half marathon will continue beyond the Talley Trail and up through the north area of town on another flat and paved area. The course eventually takes runners past the city’s Lions Park Basketball Cours and Martin Esquivel Soccer Park. Finally the course heads to the Deane Wiley Park.

The race is designed to be an easy course for all levels of runners to encourage more race participants. All proceeds raised from the event will be matched by the Clarion Inn of Garden City.
