A high-elevation trail running event that usually attracts a relatively small field of runners each year, the Quake & Shake 10K & Half Marathon offers runners a chance to run the rugged mountainous terrain of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., at 8,000 feet above sea level.
Both the half marathon and the 10K begin at the parking lot of Inyo Craters, a popular local spot for hiking and mountain biking that is actually a caldera volcanic field, which unfolds along a 30-mile fissure that stretches from Mammoth Mountain to nearby Mono Lake.
From the starting line at the Inyo Craters parking lot, runners follow the same course for the 10K and the half marathon for much of the race, running along the hiking trails and dirt roads that surround Deer Mountain, which lies just off the Mammoth Scenic Loop.
Those running the half will run the 10K course twice, making two loops around the mountain and adding an extra 0.8 miles to the end of the race to make a full 13.1 miles.
Race Weather & Climate
Located among the slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California, just a few miles east of Yosemite National Park and nearly a five-hour drive from Sacramento, Mammoth Lakes tends to experience warm, dry conditions in the summer and colder, wetter weather in the winter.
On race day (Aug. 4), the average low is 52ºF and the average high is 83ºF.
