Set for its inaugural running this fall, at what is one of the best times of the year to run here along the Virginia coast, the Race 13.1 Newport News Half Marathon is one of a growing series of events across the Southeast that organizers say has “big race perks with a local race feel.”
NOTE: This race has been discontinued and will not be run again in 2016.
Newport News is located at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, along the northern shore of the James River. Along with Virginia Beach and nearby Norfolk, the city makes up the Hampton Roads metro area, also known as the Tidewater region, and is known for its abundant waterfront homes and beaches, as well as its shipyards.
Start at Oyster Point. Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race on Town Center Drive at Oyster Point, a mixed-use, work-live-play community with office buildings, condos, retail shops and restaurants.
Oyster Point will provide runners plenty of amenities that many other races lack — like ample, free parking right beside the start/finish area, lots of coffee shops and restaurants for a pre- or post-race snack or meal and for those traveling from out of town, your choice of two hotels located less than two blocks from the start and finish line.
Fast and flat. The race’s flat out-and-back route highlights places like Christopher Newport University and the Mariners’ Museum and Park, and also features scenic views of Lake Maury and the James River. It also has few hills, which means it’s a course that will give you an excellent chance for a PR.
Runners can expect to have a text message from Race 13.1 with a link to the live results waiting for them when they cross the finish line, along with a first class post-race party.
As many as (or even more than) 1,500 runners are expected at the starting line for the half marathon, so anyone thinking of taking part is encouraged to sign up early.
