149-racereach_registerOne of a series of races in the fast-growing Race 13.1 Half Marathon Series, which started in North Carolina and has since spread across the Southeast, the Race 13.1 Richmond Half Marathon makes its second annual running in 2016 with a new and much-improved race course that starts and finishes on the Richmond International Raceway.

Runners will start the race just north of downtown Richmond in nearby Henrico County on the grounds of the Richmond Raceway Complex, a 1,000-acre multipurpose facility that’s also home to the Richmond International Raceway, which hosts events each year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series.

For all three race distance – the half marathon, 10K and 5K – runners will start the race with a loop around the Richmond International Raceway, a 3/4 mile, D-shaped oval track that’s also known as America’s premier short track.

From there, runners will take a long loop around the Richmond Raceway Complex before heading out for an out-and-back stretch onto Richmond Henrico Turnpike. From the turnpike, runners will head towards Azalea Avenue before turning around at Crenshaw Avenue to retrace the route back to the race complex.

The race will begin and end with a lap around the RIR track, and 99 percent of this year’s course will be on paved roads. Highlights of the new course include the RIR NASCAR track, Carolina Avenue and Forest Lawn Cemetary.

The course will be USATF (USA Track & Field) certified with a course limit of 3 ½ hours. The race will be open to the first 3,000 entrants — 1,500 in the half marathon, and 750 each in the 10K and 5K.
