One of a series of North Carolina-based races that are expanding across the Southeast, the Race 13.1 Wilmington Half Marathon makes its second annual running this year in this port city along the state’s southern coastline, a gorgeous place that’s served as a filming location for television shows from Dawson’s Creek to One Tree Hill to Under the Dome.
Runners are set to start the course for the race at Lumina Station, a shopping village just a couple of miles from the shore between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. From there, runners head northwest for an out-and-back stretch along Eastwood Road, and then turn south after they pass the mile 3 marker, to head onto the Cross City Trail.
This 20-mile-long running, walking and biking trail stretches from James E.L. Wade Park in the southern part of New Hanover County (where Wilmington lies), to the Heide-Trask drawbridge at Wrightsville Beach. It is planned as part of the East Coast Greenway, which will one day connect cities and communities from Maine to Florida in a kind of “urban Appalachian Trail.”
After about 2 1/2 miles along the Cross City Trail, runners will next make their way onto the University of North Carolina-Wilmington campus, where they’ll turn onto Riegel Road and head toward UNC-W’s Brooks Field, the home of the university’s UNC Wilmington Seahawks baseball team.
Next, the race runs a loop around Riegel Road and Hamilton Drive, taking runners past the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve before turning back onto the Cross City Trail. After that, runners retrace their steps in reverse, heading back along the route they covered earlier in reverse, all the way back to Lumina Station for the race finish.
The race will be USATF (USA Track & Field) certified, organizers say, and the course time limit will be 3 1/2 hours. The race will be open to the first 3,000 entrants — 1,500 in the half marathon, and 750 each in the 10K and 5K.
