Set for its seventh annual running just as winter is transitioning to spring here in South Florida, the Race for Women’s Wellness Half Marathon serves as a fundraiser for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, a locally-based charity that helps women get mammogram screenings who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford such care.

More than 1,000 runners crossed the finish line in both the 13.1-mile and 5K races combined last year, for a race that starts at the Coral Springs Tennis Center on SportsPlex Drive and finishes a stone’s throw from there, at Westchester Elementary School on Royal Palm Boulevard.

In between the start and the finish, the course unfolds along a mostly pancake-flat route through the city of Coral Springs, home to just over 120,000 people here in the Miami metro area and just east of the Everglades Wildlife Management Area.

Runners will make their way through mostly residential neighborhoods in the early miles, which wind their way along Sample Road, 123rd Avenue and Royal Palm Boulevard before turning onto Highway 817 for a stretch that runs past Coral Square Mall.

You’ll undoubtedly notice the city’s strict building codes as you make your way around the city, a legacy of Coral Springs’ origin as a planned community that got its start back in the 1960s as a project by the Westinghouse corporation and then called Coral Ridge Properties. It’s been called one of America’s best cities to live in by Money magazine, and was named to CNNMoney’s list of best places to live in the U.S. in 2010.

The last few miles unfold past the TPC Eagle Trace Golf Club before turning back onto Royal Palm Boulevard for the race finish at Westchester Elementary School.

Runners will have a 4-hour course time limit for the race.
