Set for its 9th annual running this year, San Jose’s Race to the End of Summer Half Marathon, 10K & 5K takes runners along a stretch of the Coyote Creek Trail, which winds along the creekside just to the southeast of San Jose’s downtown.

Made up of mostly paved surfaces (and a brief stretch of gravel surface) for most of its nearly 19 miles, the Coyote Creek Trail stretches from the northern end of downtown all the way southward to Anderson Lake County Park, and connects a number of city and county parks along the way, with plenty of views of the creeks and streams along the trails.

Runners — and walkers, as the race is open to both — follow an out-and-back course for the half marathon that starts and finishes at the parking lot area on Embedded Way, which lies just off Hellyer Avenue and Coyote Road.

From there, runners and walkers make what are basically two out-and-back runs, the first of which takes them southeast along the trail in the direction of Saint Teresa County Park, down to where the trail meets up with Forsum Road.

Once runners reach the first turnaround point, which lies between the 4th and 5th mile markers, they then turn around and retrace their steps along the route they’ve just run, heading back in reverse all the way nearly to the starting area.

As they reach Silver Creek Valley Road, instead of turning right to go back to the start, runners instead remain on the trail and head toward the north, heading up towards Hellyer County Park.

Though not far off the trail there are both densely populated residential neighborhoods on one side and both industrial and commercial buildings on the other, along the trail the scenery remains tranquil and filled with trees, open parklands and the creek flowing by, as much of it is covered with tree canopy.

After hitting the second turnaround, runners then head back along the trail, back toward the starting line on Embedded Road for the race finish. There is also very little elevation change to speak of anywhere along the race route, so runners can expect a largely fast and flat course.

Race Weather & Climate

Located about an hour’s drive from San Francisco in Northern California, San Jose typically sees mild to moderately warm and occasionally hot weather in August, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 47°F (in 1973) and as high as 105°F (in 1993).

On race day (Sept. 2), the average low is 58ºF and the average high is 83ºF.
