Fans of the early 1990s cult TV show Twin Peaks will likely feel right at home in this small, upscale bedroom community just outside Seattle, as the town of roughly 5,700 residents served as one of the main filming locations for the David Lynch-directed ABC series, which starred Kyle McLachlan as the intrepid Agent Cooper investigating the mysterious murder of hometown girl Laura Palmer.
Today, visitors get to take in the green, mountainous Pacific Northwest scenery that attracted the filmmakers back then, as they’ll get to trek through the hilly region known as Rattlesnake Ridge, which features a 5-mile run in addition to the half marathon. Runners will follow out-and-back courses for the five-miler, but a point-to-point course for the half marathon–or a second out-and-back course along the rail trail if they prefer.
For the ridge half marathon, runners are set to start the half at Snoqualmie Point Park, which lies just off Interstate 90, east of Echo Lake. From there, the course takes runners south along a series of trails through the hilly woods of Rattlesnake Ridge, along the the Snoqualmie Ridge Trail into the Rattlesnake Mountain Scenic Area, and join up later with the Rattlesnake Mountain Trail in the race’s second half.
This is a challenging trail run, organizers point out — the elevation gain for the half marathon is about 2,700 feet over the course of the race.
Once they make it south all the way to Rattlesnake Lake, the course turns off onto the Snoqualmie Valley Trail for a long, flat out-and-back stretch (and a break from the hills earlier in the race). The race finish line lies in the parking lot next to the lake.
For the rail half marathon, runners start at the ridge’s finish line at Rattlesnake Lake and complete an out-and-back course along the rail trail. Newly added as an option in 2019, race organizers describe this course as a fast course.
Runners may take either the race-provided shuttle bus or their own cars to the starting line at Snoqualmie Point Park. For the rail half marathon, parking is available at Rattlesnake Lake.
