Set for its 9th annual running this year through the hilly, tree-lined rural roads of southwestern Connecticut, the Redding Road Race features a half marathon, 7-mile race, what organizers call the “Mighty Cow” (the half marathon plus 3.1 extra miles) and a fun run for kids, which will be run on a 3/4-mile course entirely within the grounds of New Pond Farm.
This working farm and environmental education center was once the home of actress Carmen Matthews, whose film, television and Broadway credits include “M*A*S*H” and “The Fugitive.” Today, this 102-acre property is something of an outdoor classroom, and offers programs, classes and lectures on preservation of woodlands and wetlands as well as astronomy.
Each of the race distances for adults — the half marathon, 7-miler and the Mighty Cow race — begin and end at New Pond Farm, with the half marathon starting at 8:00 AM with an early start for walkers at 7:15 AM.
All of the races take runners along the area’s bucolic country roads, passing a horse farm, a waterfall, a rail road bridge, wetlands, streams, lakes, a historic schoolhouse circa 1789, while finishing back at beautiful New Pond Farm.
For runners in the half marathon, the course can be categorized as rolling (with no hills that would be classified as long or cruel), but, there are also plenty of miles of flat running, so runners should have no problem settling into a comfortable pace.
The Kids’ Fun runs of one mile and a half mile (both entirely on New Pond Farm grounds) will occur following the completion of the other three races.
Runners of every race will receive a gorgeous, in-house designed, 3-inch finishers medal, a 50/50 wicking race t-shirt and numerous other special surprise race goodies. It is our goal to have the Redding Road Race be the friendliest and best supported race of it’s kind in this area, or any area, for that matter, while benefitting New Pond Farm and its wonderful programs.
