Set for its sixth annual running in this southern Mississippi burg sometimes called the “Hub City” thanks to its location at the nexus of six major U.S. highways, Hattiesburg’s Rise & Shine Half Marathon saw just over 500 runners and walkers cross the finish line last year in both its 13.1-mile and 5K races combined.

The race — which serves as a fundraiser for The Arc of Southeast Mississippi, a locally-based nonprofit dedicated to helping people with mental disabilities and their families — follows and out-and-back course through this city that’s home to more than 47,000 people, and whose greater metro area boasts a population of more than 140,000.

Runners will start the race at the Hattiesburg Clinic, located at 415 South 28th Avenue, and from there they’ll first head south into the residential neighborhoods south of the clinic, along Prince George Road and Jamestown Road. Once they make it back to South 28th Avenue, they’ll head north again.

Next, they’ll run into the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi (often shortened simply to “Southern Miss”), and there they’ll spend most of the middle miles of the race, which will unfold through the heart of campus along Montague Boulevard, Pearl Street and West 4th Street, past several of the residence halls and academic buildings.

When runners make it back to Southern Miss Drive, the final three miles of the race begin with a loop around West Arlington Loop, West Adeline Street and Mandalay Drive, before bringing them back to the Hattiesburg Clinic for the race finish.

Walkers are welcome, organizers note, and the race is “very family friendly” they add, as participants may bring along baby strollers with them on the course.
