Set for its 14th annual running in early January 2017, the River, Roots and Ruts Trail run provides both experienced and novice trail runners the chance to experience a beautiful and challenging trail through Alva, Florida.
Half marathon runners will make their way through moss-laden river oak hammocks as they make their way along the Caloosahatchee river. Starting on the south side of North River Road, runners will follow 5 miles of wider trails at eight feet across, compared to the following 8 miles of less than two foot across mountain bike trails on the north side.
While the course boasts many twists and turns, the course is basically flat with a couple of “speed bumps.” Runners of the half marathon should follow the blue tape, with red and pink tape warning not to go that way. Aid stations are located at the 1.2, 3.2, 6.2, 7.4, 10.5, 11.3 and 12.2 mile mark.
For the first mile, runners will run through Oak Hammock, parallel to the river. After about 1.5 miles, runners will make their way north onto Palmetto path, weaving around trees, over rocks and roots. Just past the 3 mile mark, half marathoners will cross over North River road. This is where the course becomes truly challenge as the rigor of a narrow trail, with hairpin turns takes over.
A trail mostly made of packed dirt or shell with a few sand and rocky spots, runners will make their way through Sunburn Meadow, Speed Bumps and Caloutta Ridge for the next 2 miles. At the 5 mile mark, participants enter tractor lane as they weave and turn around Lollipop and Far East. Just past Three Bridges, the course takes runners over North River road once again for the last 2 miles as they head to the finish/lodge, not too far from the starting line.
The finish line will include water, sports drinks, bagels from the Bagel Factory and fruit from Sun Harvest and Publix. There is a 3 hour time limit for the half marathon (13:44 min/mile). Registration is limited to 350 with the race often selling out, so sign up early!
