Running events get started for all kinds of reasons. Some are big-city races with tens of thousands of participants and spectators, while others may host only a few dozen entrants in a small town.
There’s probably no race that’s more meaningful, especially to its runners and the people involved with the event, than Gross Ile’s Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon & 5K.
That’s because the event’s host and race director is a woman named Emily Schaller, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was just a one-and-a-half-year-old, the victim of a disease that makes it difficult for those afflicted with it to breathe and absorb nutrients from the foods they eat.
But as her parents would encourage her to do, Ms. Schaller decided that being a “victim” just wasn’t in her vocabulary.
Today she’s a well-known spokesperson for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and an active athlete, counting both running and biking among her passions.
The Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon is her creation, an event to raise both funds and awareness for the nonprofit organization she founded to help in the fight against cystic fibrosis, which is dedicated both to raising money for research and to improving the quality of life for those living with the disease today.
Runners are set to follow an out-and-back course that makes a counter-clockwise loop around Gross Ile, starting in the parking lot of Gross Ile Middle School and finishing on the running track at Gross Ile High School, which lies just a block away from the middle school, off South Gray Drive.
In between the start and the finish, runners will follow paved roadways around the edges of the island for nearly the entire race, and enjoy mostly flat and fast surfaces for most of the race as well.
In addition to the individual half marathon, there is also a 2-person half marathon relay — runners in the first leg of the relay will run for about 7.6 miles and transfer at the island’s water treatment plant on West River Drive. Runners in the second leg of the race will run 5.5 miles, bringing it in to the race finish line at the high school.
Race Weather & Climate
Located on an island in the Detroit River that serves as the border between the U.S. and Canada, about 20 miles south of downtown Detroit, Gross Ile typically sees March temperatures that average between 29°F and 46°F, while precipitation amounts average just under 2.3 inches for the month.
