Note: This race is not returning to Brooklyn in 2018. The below information refers to the 2017 race.
Set for its third annual running this year, after last year’s race saw more than 13,000 runners cross the finish line, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon (run in previous years as a 10K only) is destined to become a fall classic with a route that starts and finishes in this city’s iconic Prospect Park.
From the 585-acre park, which was designed by the legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux after they completed Central Park about a decade earlier, runners next head out onto Eastern Parkway and make their way east through Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood.
Just before they reach the mile 2 marker near Albany Avenue, runners make the first turn and follow Eastern Parkway west back toward the park. They’ll turn left at Flatbush Avenue and head south through the park, starting a stretch that heads downhill at first and then flattens out for the next several miles.
Through this stretch, which is marked by turns on Parkside Avenue and Ocean Parkway, runners will make their way past the Prospect Park Parade Ground and spend a long out-and-back on Ocean, which if they ran all the way all the way south would take runners to Brighton Beach, the New York Aquarium and the shores of Coney Island.
Between mile markers 7 and 8, runners make another turnaround and head back north along Ocean Parkway, through Kensington and all the way until they make it back to Prospect Park. There, they’ll follow East Drive and West Drive on a meandering route through the park, passing by its lake and the Prospect Park Zoo along the way.
The course goes downhill for a couple of miles and begins a climb right at mile 12 where runners gain 100 feet of elevation in their last push. After you cross the finish line, stick around for a headliner concert in the park later in the day, free to runners and the public.
Race Weather & Climate
With its humid continental climate, Brooklyn usually sees falling temperatures as summer gives way to fall in October, with typical highs in the low 60s and lows in the upper 40s by the time race day comes around. Though a late season push could make it slightly warmer during the day, race morning is likely to be pleasant for running.
On race day (Oct. 14), the average low is 47ºF and the average high is 64ºF.
