The Macomb Orchard Trail, a more than 20-mile long stretch of paved running, walking and biking trails that stretches from Shelby Township all the way to Richmond here in southeastern Michigan, serves as most of the route at the early autumn running of the Romeo 2 Richmond Half Marathon & 5K.

The race is designed as a benefit for two local nonprofits — the Macomb Food Program, which distributes food to those in need in Michigan’s Macomb County; and Medals 4 Mettle, which gives marathon, half marathon and triathlon finishers’ medals to local children and adults facing debilitating and/or chronic diseases, in honor of the mettle and courage they display every day in living with and fighting their diseases.

The half marathon race begins at Crystal Diamonds Park in the nearby town of Romeo, which lies almost exactly 13 miles from downtown Richmond. From there, runners head out onto 33 Mile Road for roughly the first mile and a half of the race, before turning left onto the Macomb Orchard Trail, just after crossing Romeo Plank Road.

Runners remain on the trail for the next 10 miles of the race all the way into Richmond, passing by the town of Armada and past a combination of both tree-lined linear park areas as well as wide-open spaces, thanks to the rural farm fields between the towns.

There are a few rolling hills along the race route, but otherwise most of the course is relatively flat and fast, as the elevation ranges from a peak of around 780 feet above sea level near the starting line to just over 700 feet at its lowest point, around the mile 9 marker.

Runners will be shuttled by bus from the packet pickup area at the Richmond Gateway Trail Park Pavilion to the starting line in Romeo before the start of the race.
