Named for the historic fort that dates back to the late 1840s and was built here as part of the United States’ Pacific defense in what was then the Oregon Territory, Fort Steilacoom Park plays host to the annual late summer run 4 Ultrasound Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races, which are part of a weekend full of running, biking and walking events here.

The half marathon is open to both runners and walkers, and follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Fort Steilacoom playground.

From there, racers will make their way past and around the park’s dog park, past the campus of Pierce College and around the shoreline of Waughop Lake — all of this they’ll do twice, as the course follows a double-loop route.

The race’s organizers note that the courses are mostly flat, fast and fantastically beautiful with one memorable hill (make that two for the half-marathon). The course is a combination of trail and pavement, and is well-marked with signage and course monitors; runners can expect to see plenty of water stations out on the course.

There will be a free pancake breakfast, event photo and post-race massages for all paying registrants (kids 10 years old and under are free). For half-marathoners who like or need extra time to complete the race, there is also an unofficial early start, about one hour before the runners begin.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the shoreline of Commencement Bay in northwest Washington state, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Tacoma, Lakewood typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in August, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 41 degrees (in 1984) and as high as 93 degrees (in 1996).

On race day (Aug. 5), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 77ºF.
