On the windswept island of Barbados, out in the North Atlantic about 60 miles east of the Windward Islands the beginning of the Caribbean Sea, runners get the chance to make their way along the shoreline for nearly the entire route at this late fall-early winter race, where you’ll get to gaze out as you run into the blue waters of Carlisle Bay.

Just over 1,700 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in all races combined last year — including the full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K runs and walks, a mile run and a team relay — with just over 340 finishers in the 13.1-mile event.

You’ll start the race at the Bay Street Esplanade, located along the street by the same name on the western edge of the island, just south of Bridgetown. The area is known for its gorgeous views of the water as well as Brownes Beach and Pebbles Beach, which are among the most popular on the island.

It’s also a place where you can see ships and boats sailing out in the bay, or cast your eye south toward Needham’s Point, where the reefs make a natural swimming pool between the sandy beach and the ocean.

From there, you’ll follow the half marathon route as it heads north through Bridgetown, the capital and largest city in Barbados. You’ll see plenty of evidence of the island as tourist mecca as you run along the Wharf Road, where cruise ships dock.

Once you pass through this section and make your way onto Princess Alice Highway, the next stretches run along Prescod Boulevard and Spring Garden Highway until runners hit the half-way point, just south of Sandy Lane Beach. After that, you’ll retrace your steps all the way back to the Bay Street Esplanade, where the finish line lies.

Thanks to its island location, the race is very flat — most of the route lies at just a few feet above sea level, with the exception of some gentle hills around mile markers 4 and 9, near Paradise Beach.
