Nestled among the north Georgia mountains that blend into the southern Appalachians and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, the 13th annual Run At The Mill Half Marathon, 10K & 5K is part of a program called Run For God that seeks to encourage Christians to deepen their faith and further their health through a 12-week training program that blends mind, spirit and body.

The race, which lies just a short drive north of Dalton and roughly an hour and a half north of Atlanta, is part of a series of running events that are set to take place around the Southeast in conjunction with the Run For God program — and includes races throughout the year in Dalton, Georgia and nearby Cohutta, Georgia — and were begun by a Georgia resident named Mitchell Hollis.

After training for running Atlanta’s Peachtree Road Race for the first time on the 4th of July 2007, Mr. Hollis became an avid runner, entering as many running and endurance events as he could in the next few years, and enlisting his wife and children to participate alongside him when they could.

He said, however, that he felt he was being pulled away from what he later came to feel was his true calling, and that was to combine his love of running with his faith, and to blend the two into what would become a “running ministry,” he says.

And thus, the Run For God program was born. Today, the program offers a 12-week series of training classes that seek to inspire Christians to be “better witnesses for Christ… physically, mentally and spiritually,” and organized its first three official events for the spring and summer of 2011.

The first of these, the Run For God – Run At The Mill Half Marathon in Varnell, is set to follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Prater’s Mill, the site of a historic mid-1800s-era gristmill that remains in operation today.

From Prater’s Mill — which also hosts what is probably the area’s most popular fall events, the annual Prater’s Mill Country Fair in October — runners head out on a clockwise loop route that takes them north along Old Prater’s Mill Road, north along Wilson Road, east along Cohutta Beaverdale Road, south along Gaughey Chapel Road and south along Crow Road before bringing them back to the finish line along Prater’s Mill Road.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Georgia’s northeast corner, roughly 90 miles northwest of Atlanta and about 30 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tenn., Dalton typically sees mild April temperatures, while rainfall averages just over 4 inches for the month, making April one of its driest months of the year.

On race day (April 12), the average low is 47ºF and the average high is 72ºF.
