runsignup-newSet for its 8th annual running in 2017 — and its 7th with the half marathon distance, after last year’s 13.1-mile race saw 30 runners cross the finish line — Haviland’s Run for Missions Half Marathon, 10K & 5K takes runners on an out-and-back loop that starts and finishes on Elm Street in this small town in southern Kansas.

Designed as a benefit to raise money for the “Run for Missions” scholarship fund organized by the Evangelical Friends Church Mid America, the race takes runners along a combination of paved roads through neighborhoods in the town and some dirt roads and off-road trails for brief stretches, including a long out-and-back stretch into the rural farm fields that lie just north of town.

The half marathon runners follow the same course as those running the 10K and 5K races for about the first 4 3/4 miles, as the race route first makes a counter-clockwise loop around the edges of town and then follows a number of twists and turns along the streets before bringing runners back to the starting line between the mile 3 and 4 markers.

Here, those running the 5K will cross the finish line while those running the 10K and 13.1-mile distances will continue on east along Sycamore Street.

Next, the course heads east and then turns north, taking runners up to the point where the 10K runners will turn left and head west toward the Haviland Cemetery.

The half marathoners continue on north, however, adding another 3.45 miles north along the road to the turnaround point, where they’ll make the turn and then head back south along the road to the turn toward the cemetery. Once they make the turn at the cemetery, runners will then be in the home stretch, heading back toward the finish line at the gymnasium on Elm Street.

For the truly adventurous runner — for whom five kilometers, 10 kilometers or even 13.1 miles isn’t enough — the event will also host a 100-mile race that starts in November.

Also a fundraiser for the scholarship fund (and officially titled the “100-Mile Fundraiser Run”), the event will take runners on an out-and-back course from Haviland to Wichita — that’s about 24 hours straight of running, only with breaks every 3 to 5 miles to refill water bottles and get food.

Runners are welcome to run the entire 100 miles or just certain parts of it with the group if they like. Walkers are also welcome in the 5K, 10K and half marathon events, provided they can complete the course within the race time limit, which is 3 hours for the half marathon.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central southern Kansas, about 100 miles west of Wichita and roughly 290 miles southwest of Kansas City, Haviland typically sees October temperatures that average between 43°F and 69°F, while rainfall totals average just under 1.9 inches for the month.

On race day (Oct. 28), the average low is 38ºF and the average high is 65ºF.
