Saturday, October 7, 2017 • George Town, Bahamas • Course Map

Set for its 3rd annual running this fall in the largest city on this chain of more than 380 islands in the Bahamas, the Run For Pompey features a full marathon, ultra-marathon, half marathon, 10K and a 2K “George Town Dash” for kids, all to commemorate the memory of a man whose actions led to the emancipation of the slaves on this Atlantic island nation.

The man the race honors is Pompey, who in 1830 was one of thousands of slaves working in the fields on these islands. When his plantation owner on the island of Exuma ordered him transferred to work on another island, Pompey refused and fled into the nearby woods, eluding capture and drawing many fellow slaves to his side to escape with him.

Later lauded as a hero by many of his fellow slaves, Pompey ultimately was returned to his slave master. But his act of rebellion proved to be the catalyst for a movement that would lead to the emancipation of slaves in the Bahamas by the end of the decade.

For runners in the race, they’ll start their first mile in Regatta Park in George Town, the largest city on Great Exuma, which stretches some 37 miles long and lies right along the Tropic of Cancer in the Atlantic.

From there, they’ll follow the island’s main road along the coastline, passing within sight of Crab Cay, Elizabeth Island and Man-o-War Cay just off the coast, all the way to the turnaround point for the half marathon in Rolletown.

Once they make the turn, they’ll head back all the way to George Town for the race finish line. When they run the race, runners will support the Pompey Scholarship, which provides money for educational programs and facilities to students who don’t have the means to pursue post-secondary education here on Exuma.
